Rural Special Constables

Hertfordshire Police launched their exciting new project for Rural Special Constables at the Orchard Barn on the Gaddesden Estate on Tuesday 27th October 2009. Deputy Lieutenant Nicholas Halsey hosted the event on behalf of Hertfordshire Constabulary with Assistant Chief Constable Heather Valentine and Neighbourhood Inspector George Holland (both pictured). Inspector George Holland was previously a Special Constable and has been influential in creating the role within the county.
The event was to raise awareness of Hertfordshire Constabulary’s recruitment drive for Rural Special Constables, in particular mounted Rural Specials.
Hertfordshire is one of the first forces in the UK to introduce these volunteers with police powers dedicated to rural areas and they will have the option of using their own horses as a mode of transport – making Hertfordshire the first Force in the UK to do this.
Assistant Chief Constable Heather Valentine said: “We are utilising the skills and experience of people within the community – gamekeepers, horse riders and other rural residents – to perform the specialised Rural Special Constable role.
Inspector George Holland said: “Our Rural Special Constables will have full police powers as volunteer officers and will therefore be able to deal with any incidents affecting the rural community for example fly tipping, theft of machinery and equine equipment. As well as helping to detect crime, they will be a visible deterrent and offer a reassuring presence to the rural community.
Country Land and Business Association Regional Director Nicola Currie said: “Rural policing requires a very specific set of skills and knowledge so the CLA is pleased that Hertfordshire Constabulary is taking the Rural Special Constable initiative so seriously. Rural policing must be treated with just as much importance as urban police work, the issues are just different and we look forward to continuing to work with the country’s police to help combat rural crime.
If you are interested in becoming a Rural Special Constable and in general good health who has an interest or lives in a rural community can apply to become a Rural Special Constable.
